How to stop Spam texts

Our earlier advice. In a previous article we explained why you shouldn’t reply “stop” to any unsolicited text messages received on company mobile phones from unidentified eleven-digit numbers (yr.12, iss.20, pg.7, see The next step). Basically, this Spam is randomly generated by computer and a response will confirm that the recipient is real. As a result, you could get more similar texts or even phone calls.

New approach. Over recent months, use of this type of Spam text message has rocketed, with those relating to mis-sold PPI, debts and accident claims being the most prevalent (and probably the most annoying). To stop this trend, network providers are allowing customers to forward the Spam texts to them so they can try to block them at source.

Tip. Those of you on 02, 3 and Everything Elsewhere (formerly T-Mobile Orange) networks can forward them onto 7726 (it spells “Spam” on a traditional keypad). Vodafone customers should use 87726. If you’ve responded to an unidentified eleven-digit number and it appears your details have been passed on to a claims company, contact the ICO’s Helpline on 0303 123 1113. It’s looking for evidence to shut these operators down.
