Sharing holiday pictures with family and friends

When you’re on holiday, you will probably take pictures using your smartphone. Perhaps you’d like share them with family and friends while you’re still on the spot. How?

Sharing - smartphone or tablet

On the iPhone, it has been possible to share a Photo Stream album with your friends since the introduction of iOS 6. Open the Photo app, select the desired photos, tap on Photo Stream and then on the “plus” icon; enter an album name. Enable the Public website option if you also want to share the album on iCloud.com. In the To: field, select the contacts you want to invite via e-mail. People who accept your invitation can view the shared album by using the Photo app on their own iOS device, “like” photos and add comments. Alternatively, they can surf to the iCloud.com address and view the photos there. Note. Photos older than 30 days are removed from the iCloud server. Do you have an Android device? Via Automatic Upload (Auto Backup) in your Google+ app, you can have your photos and videos uploaded automatically to a private album in Google+. You can opt to do so only if you are connected to a Wi-Fi network (in order to avoid high data costs, especially abroad). Google+ keeps your photos without any limitations. You can share this private album with your Google+ circles, or you can invite other people via e-mail to view the album on the web. Sharing from the Facebook app

You can, of course, upload your photos one by one to the Facebook site. However, the Facebook app is also equipped with a Photosync option which sends the photos on your mobile device immediately to a private Facebook album. To activate this type of synchronisation, go to Photos in the Facebook app and tap on the Synchronise tab at the bottom. Simply follow the instructions, and from now on all the photos you take will be uploaded to a Synced from Phone album automatically (up to 2GB). The photos remain invisible to your friends until you share them actively: again go to the Photos section, tap on the Synchronised tab and check the photos you wish to share. Choose Create Post to share photos on your timeline or Send in message to share photos in a private message. Here again, you can configure whether you want to synchronise via Wi-Fi or the mobile network. If you opt for the mobile network, smaller versions of your photos will be synchronised to limit data costs. For more information, visit https://www.facebook.com/help/photosync.

Other methods for sharing photos

For greater control, it’s best to use Burst (http://www.burst.it - iOS and Android). This app lets you upload a photo or video directly to your personal Burst site, add a message and specify the contacts who are allowed to view them (they don’t even need to have installed Burst themselves). Another popular app is Path (https://path.com - iOS and Android). It allows you to keep a diary in which you can share photos, videos and ideas with your friends (max. 150 people), who also need to use the Path app. Cluster (https://www.getcluster.com - only for iOS for now) lets you create a shared album for a specific event (e.g. a music festival). All users who attend this event can have their photos uploaded automatically to this photo album, in order to give an overall idea of the event. Burst offers a similar feature called “bubble”.

Use the integrated options in iOS and Android to share your holiday pictures directly with family and friends. The Facebook app, as well as apps such as Burst, Path and Cluster, are very handy tools for sharing snapshots on the spot.
