EMERGENCY ARRANGEMENTS - 25.08.2017

Q&A - should you dial 112 or 999?

Q. We are told by some safety trainers that if we require emergency services, dialling 112 is much better than 999 as it gives more specific location information. Is this correct?

A. If you phone either 999 or 112 your call is directed to an emergency control centre in exactly the same way. Neither one is better than the other. The same location details are passed to emergency services regardless of which one you dial. For example, the emergency services can identify an area from within which a mobile phone is used by triangulation - using the phone’s relative proximity to masts.

Dialling 112 or 999 in the UK will access the control centre for the emergency services in exactly the same way. Neither one is better.
