New business options in Pinterest

It is said that “a picture tells a thousand words”. The popular Pinterest can help you to spread your visual message worldwide. A good idea, even in a business context!

Social noticeboard

Pinterest ( http://www.pinterest.com ) is a social-media photo and video platform. It is mainly used to share existing content which is already available online - including your own website. So Pinterest is actually a “social noticeboard”. Tip. Interestingly, Pinterest lets you create a separate page for your business: check out http://business.pinterest.com .

How to use your business Pinterest. The main aim of a business Pinterest account is to inspire your customers. So, don’t use this network only as a catalogue of your own products, but present relevant photos illustrating a specific theme or trend. Create inspiring “moodboards”. Your customers can collect these boards on their own noticeboard and share them with their followers. Tip. Conveniently, a business account allows you to work with multiple people within the same account. In this way, colleagues can work together on the preparation of a targeted advertising campaign.

Your audience. Pinterest has more than 200 million users worldwide, with a larger following of women than of men. These are the most recent figures according to Sprout Social ( https://sproutsocial.com ):

% men active online on Pinterest 17%
% women active online on Pinterest 45%
% between 18 and 29 years on Pinterest 36%
% between 30 and 49 years on Pinterest 34%
% between 50 and 64 years on Pinterest 28%

Dynamic cover

Your Pinterest business account lets you create a dynamic cover consisting of different pins. This helps you showcase specific content such as your new products. You’re free to determine which pins should be shown on the cover.

Widgetmaker

The Pinterest Widgetmaker ( https://goo.gl/fvQQNp ) lets you insert a Follow button on the product pages of your corporate website, a button inviting your visitors to follow you on Pinterest. The Save button makes it easier for them to save the things they like in one click. Tip. The statistics section tells you which pins people like most and what elements of your website are saved by visitors. In this way, you can find out who your followers are and what they do. This valuable information helps you to gear your future strategies to your target group.

Hashtags

Pinterest allows the use of hashtags. These # labels allow you to emphasise the theme of your photos and videos, making it easier for your visitors to find your pins. Tip. More tips on the advantages and disadvantages of hashtags in a business setting can be found at bit.ly/hashtagpinterest .

The future

In the future, you will probably be able to apply targeted advertising on Pinterest (against payment).

Note. The Buy It buttons have already been introduced in the US, allowing followers to buy items directly in Pinterest. This isn’t possible here as yet.

Showcase specific content - for instance new products - on the Pinterest page of your business by means of the new dynamic cover feature. The recently introduced hashtags make your pins more accessible to visitors.
