Recovery tools in Windows

Even a stable system like Windows 10 can run into problems. For assistance, you do not need to directly go and check out Internet forums or use external tools: Windows itself contains a number of good tools to recover corrupt files.

Troubleshooting

First of all, check which suggestions Windows itself gives via its troubleshooters . You can find them via Windows Settings (type in “settings” in the search function), where you should select Update and Security and open Troubleshooting . Choose from about 20 available troubleshooters.

Tip. Some more advanced troubleshooters can be found as follows: press the Windows key, type config and open the Control Panel . Type problem in the search bar, choose Troubleshooting and click Show All in the left panel.

File history

Activate file history. To avoid accidentally losing deleted files permanently, you should enable the file history function.

Go to Windows Settings and choose Update and Security . Open the Backup section, click Add a Drive and select the drive you want to back up. Windows will then make a backup of your most important files at a customisable frequency.

Tip. To make this backup to a network drive or a NAS, click More Options ; Show Advanced Settings ; Select Drive ; Add Network Location .

Recover data. To restore an earlier version of a file, right-click on it in the File Explorer and open the Previous Version tab in Properties .

To recover a deleted file, press the Windows key, type file , and run Restore your Files with File History . Via Restore Personal Files , you can see all the folders you’ve backed up.

System restore point

If the installation of an application or driver causes problems, you can restore your entire system by returning to a previous “system restore point”. Press Windows key+R and run rstrui.exe . Choose a restore point and follow the instructions.

Tip. If no restore points are listed, this may mean that the system security feature is not active. To change this, press the Windows key , type restore and choose Create a Restore Point . Select the desired drive, click Configure and tick Enable System Security .

Safe mode

If your system does not start properly, you can always try launching Windows in a minimalistic environment: the safe mode . Windows Support ( https://bit.ly/2tv20az ) describes three different methods to boot your computer in this safe mode.

Reset

If you want to completely reset your computer, go to Windows Settings and choose Update and Security ; System Restore ; Getting Started . You can now choose between Keep my Files and Delete All . Note. If you choose the second option, Windows will not only remove all the installed apps and drivers, but all your data files! In Update and Security , you will find the Start Again with a Clean Installation (....) option. If you choose this option, all your personal data will be retained and Windows will automatically be updated to the latest version. In contrast, the computer manufacturer’s apps will not be reinstalled, however, only the default apps in Windows.

If you have problems with corrupt files, try the built-in Windows troubleshooting feature first. In addition, enable the file history function and regularly create “system restore points” in Windows, so that you can easily return to an earlier, healthy situation.
