BREXIT - 03.10.2019

Can you apply for the customs training grant?

If the UK leaves the EU on 31 October 2019 without a deal, businesses will have to apply the same customs rules to goods moving between the EU and UK as they would for the rest of the world. As a result, HMRC has invested further money into its grant programme to fund employee training needed for businesses that make customs declarations.

Are you eligible? If your business is based in, or has a branch in, the UK, is in good standing with HMRC and is currently importing and/or exporting to the EU then you can apply for up to 100% of the cost of training yourself or your staff to complete customs declarations and handle other customs procedures.

How much? The training grant will give you up to 100% of the cost of training for your employees, up to a limit of £2,250 for each employee per course. It will also cover the cost of training you run internally, up to a limit of £250 for each employee on the course. In total, you can claim up to the state aid limit of €200,000. You can also apply for any eligible training costs incurred on or after 31 July 2019 and before the relaunch of the grant on 3 September 2019.

How to apply? Accountants PwC are administering the grant for HMRC and you can find out more details and apply online at https://www.customsintermediarygrant.co.uk . Applications will close on 31 January 2020 (or earlier if funding is fully allocated).

If your business will have to complete customs declarations, you can claim up to £2,250 per employee per course for training in how to complete them. It can also be used to cover previous training costs provided incurred between 31 July 2019 and 2 September 2019 inclusive.
