Make the Google search results even better
Scrolling through the search results
If you don’t like having to click through consecutive pages of search results, install the Chrome extension Infinite Scroll for Google. This allows you to view the search results as one long continuous page which automatically becomes longer as you scroll down. This is useful if you want to check a lot of results.
Tip. These and other extensions for Chrome can be found on https://chrome.google.com/webstore/category/extensions .
Relevance
If you want to get an initial idea of the relevance of one of the search results, install the Google Results Previewer extension: it shows a preview of the website in a pop-up windows as soon as you hover your mouse pointer over a search result.
Searching within websites
Some websites do not have a search function of their own. If you install the Search the Current Site extension, you only need to open the website concerned and click on the icon of the extension in the Chrome navigation bar. This will open a pop-up search field that limits the results to this specific site.
The Discussions Button for Google Search extension adds a Discussions option to the tabs at the top of the search results. If you click on this icon, you will be shown a large number of results from discussion groups. This can be useful for example for technical information or medical self-help groups.
Search by date
One of the best ways to obtain more relevant results is to define a time period, e.g. only results from the “past week”. You can set this time period default by clicking on the Tools tab in the top right corner of the search page and then selecting the desired time period in the Any Time menu. The Google Search Date Range Shortcut extension makes this menu always available, plus it adds a few extra options for setting time periods ( “last 3, 6 or 18 months” or more precisely “from ... to ...” ).
Better image search
If you frequently search for images via Google Images ( https://images.google.com ), you may find it annoying that you see a preview of this image first rather than the direct image itself. With the Straight to Full-Size for Google Images extension installed, you will be taken directly to the image so that you can download it immediately.
Another problem with Google Images is that you get too many results from Pinterest ( https://www.pinterest.com ). True, Pinterest can be an interesting source of inspiration, but you can only view the Pinterest images if you already have a Pinterest account.
If you don’t want to be disturbed by those inaccessible Pinterest images, install the Unpinterested! Chrome extension, which will filter Pinterest images out of all Google search results.
If you’re looking for similar (higher-resolution) images based on an image you found on a webpage, install the Search by Image extension. You only have to right-click on an image in order to launch the search.
