Shielding measures paused from 1 August 2020
Return to work
Many shielding employees have continued to work from home during the pandemic. Those who are unable to do so can return to work from 1 August 2020 (see Follow up ).
Pro advice. Put sufficiently robust measures in place to enable shielders to safely return. This may involve moving them, with their agreement, to the safest available on-site roles (and they should continue to work from home if they can). Speak to them personally well in advance of their return to discuss the specific protective measures you’re implementing and to agree a return to work plan. Don’t forget your duty to make reasonable adjustments too; most shielders will be disabled under the Equality Act 2010 .
Statutory sick pay and furlough
Shielders are currently deemed incapable of work and so are entitled to statutory sick pay (SSP). However, the entitlement to SSP on the basis of being clinically extremely vulnerable will end on 31 July 2020. If they’ve been on furlough, shielders can remain on furlough.
