CARBON EMISSIONS REDUCTION PLAN - 24.08.2020

Carbon emissions plans

It’s increasingly likely that prospective clients or accreditation schemes will ask you to supply a carbon emissions reduction plan. If you find yourself in this position, use our document to showcase your green credentials.

Prove you’re environmentally friendly

Increasing your green credentials might simply be part of your marketing plan or it could be driven by external factors such as getting on an approved list of suppliers. Whatever your reasons, a carbon emissions reduction plan is one of the documents you might use to demonstrate your commitment (see The next step ). Not only does it provide a structured improvement plan for your business to work through, it also helps to maintain focus in your team and manages expectations as to how much you intend to achieve and by when.

How to use our document

Before you begin, you’ll need to identify your current CO2 output. This is so you can identify a realistic target for your reduced carbon emissions and measure your progress. It’s best to base your figures on a standard international measure such as the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.

Tip. In the first part of the document you should write your target percentage reduction and planned timeframe. You’ll also need to record the expected financial savings from implementing the new measures.

Fill in the blanks and amend and add to our document as you see fit to tailor the plan to your own business.

What’s covered?

We have split our document into eight sections. The three main ones are titled: “Reducing energy used in the operation of buildings” , “Reducing energy used for travel” and “Reducing the energy impact of our products, services and business activities” . Each includes a list of suggested actions you may wish to include in your own plan.

The practical ideas we’ve included are great ways to start reducing your carbon emissions. For example, in the travel section some of our suggestions cover the use of low carbon vehicles and implementing maximum mileage targets.

The document looks at both practical and organisational solutions, from increasing the insulation in your building, through to employee training, procurement arrangements and product design.

Tip. Choose the actions you wish to use, delete the rest, and add any further ideas. As a result of the pandemic many businesses have already identified new ways to reduce their carbon footprint, such as increasing the use of video conferencing for meetings and training. Include these learning points in your plan.

Tip. Raise awareness of your objectives amongst your workforce so that everyone is working towards the same goal.

Tip. Summarise how you will fund, implement and monitor your planned improvements in sections five to seven and finish your document with a summary of current projects in the table provided.

Once you’ve calculated your current carbon emissions use the structure and ideas in our template to set realistic reduction targets and a plan of action. Tailor the document by choosing the ideas that are relevant to your organisation and adding your own.
