How can we let off fireworks safely?

Q. We’re looking for ways to lift our staff and customers’ spirits going into this winter. Assuming that we can meet coronavirus guidelines is it possible to set off a few fireworks without over-the-top arrangements?

A. Although there are obvious risks in using fireworks, provided you’re prepared to apply some sensible precautions you can use them safely and legally at a small local event.

Tip. Write down your planned safety precautions in a risk assessment. You can use our example as a starting point (see The next step ). This includes advice to: (1) use only F1, F2 and F3 category fireworks; (2)  purchase them from a reputable supplier; (3) ensure you have a large enough space so that the fireworks land away from spectators; (4)  choose somewhere safe to store them; (5) be prepared for emergencies, and more.

Tip. Purchasing a complete display kit with full safety instructions will make it easier to do things correctly, relative to buying individual fireworks. Think carefully about who will set off the fireworks. Ideally, they’ll have done it before.

Tip. If this is not an activity you’ve previously declared to your insurer, make sure they’re informed in advance. Show them your risk assessment confirming you have the hazards under control.

If you wish to use fireworks, follow sensible precautions such as checking that you have enough space and choosing someone competent to set them off. Confirm that the activity is covered by your insurance policy.
