DRESS AND APPEARANCE - 24.09.2020

Q&A - dress standards online

Q. We’ve noticed that one of our employees isn’t dressing appropriately during our online meetings. What’s the best way to tackle this?

A. Whilst things may be slightly more relaxed when employees are working from home, an online meeting is still a professional setting. Therefore, employees should be appropriately dressed in suitable work attire. Rather than single certain individuals out, it’s better to issue a general reminder to all staff and ask them to keep in mind dress and appearance standards, particularly if they will be meeting clients online. You could also generally remind staff about the location that they select when joining online meetings, e.g. messy bedrooms and kitchens should be avoided.

Remember that dress and appearance can be an indicator of declining mental health, so it’s worth having an informal one-to-one chat with your employee to find out how they are and if they might need any support. You can sensitively mention that you’ve noticed their recent appearance and ask them if everything is OK. Provide support if needed.

Where employees attend meetings online, they should dress appropriately in suitable work attire. A change in appearance can be an indicator of declining mental health, so arrange an informal chat to check on their wellbeing and provide support if needed.
