Single-use carrier bag charge extended

All covered. Since its introduction in 2015, the single-use carrier bag charge of 5p has applied to any retailer that employs 250 or more people. However, in August 2020 the government announced that the single-use carrier bag charge is to be extended.

New rules. From April 2021 all retailers will be subject to the single use carrier bag charge and there will be no small business exemption. The single-use charge will also increase from 5p to 10p per bag.

Tip. As is the case now, the charges won’t apply where a single-use plastic carrier bag has a thickness of 70 microns or less; has previously been used; is made of woven plastic or is replaced if it wears out, e.g. it’s a bag for life. A charge is also not levied where a plastic bag has no handles, e.g. it is a sealable bag or a plastic sack design.

From April 2021 all retailers will be subject to the single-use carrier bag charge which also increases from 5p to 10p per bag. However, you won’t have to charge for those that have a thickness of 70 microns or less or are of a certain design, e.g. no handles.
