TAX TITBITS - 30.03.2006

The next artful dodger

NI. There has been a flurry of written questions in the House of Commons recently about the NI position of members of orchestras! Although the law was re-written in 1998, the Taxman has only now got around to doing something about enforcing the change. In fact the Paymaster General, Dawn Primarolo, did say that this NI problem had only become evident in 2004 when the Taxman “undertook customer support activity” in the orchestra sector. We assume this to be a euphemism for “sent out arrears of bills”. The NI “change” includes actors and other entertainers.

Income tax. If you have a budding entertainer in the family who is being paid for their appearances, what expenses could they claim for tax purposes? More than you’d think.

For a list of items that have successfully been claimed by entertainers against their tax visit http://tax.indicator.co.uk (TX 06.12.08).

If you have a musician/entertainer in the family, use our checklist to see what can be successively claimed against their income from this source. Less for you to have to fund perhaps?
