It might be a good idea to close for a few days

Refurbishing premises and maintaining “business as normal” can be difficult at the best of times. It can be even worse if members of the public frequent your premises when the builders are in and the additional risks have to be managed properly. However, if you get a visit from your friendly enforcement authorities during the work and they offer helpful suggestions, then it pays not to just listen but to take action accordingly. Rochdale magistrates recently fined a shop proprietor £9,000 for failing to take even basic precautions to protect the health and safety of members of the public, including children, and his own employees, during major building work at his shop premises. These failures were compounded when he ignored warnings from the Council’s officials.

If you’re having renovation works, you’ll need to ensure you protect your staff and clients. Either segregate the area, or close down.
