Why hire convicts?

If you haven’t considered the issue you’re not alone; a survey of 160 business leaders found just 7% would consider a policy of recruiting ex-offenders as full-time staff. But another found that 82% of private sector employers who knowingly employed ex-offenders were pleased with their performance. Staff turnover was lower than the norm and their work commitment was high; two potential plusses for your bottom line.

Why bother? Irrespective of your personal beliefs, there’s a commercial edge to this. The government wants to reduce crime and the resulting prison population. If you bid for public sector contracts you’re increasingly likely to be asked your employment policy in this area. Don’t have one and you could lose the contract. For help in this area contact http://www.unlock.org.uk - it’s a charity so there aren’t any catches!

If you don’t have a policy on employing ex-offenders you could miss out on contracts.
