Tidy site, safe site

We all know that keeping floors clean can minimise slips and trips. But what did a recent in-depth study into the subject identify that isn’t so obvious?

A common problem. Slips, trips and falls are perennial workplace hazards. As such, they’re also the focus of numerous studies and investigations in how to solve the problem. One of the latest was conducted by the Health & Safety Laboratory (HSL). What is the HSL? They are the boffins who provide the HSE with their figures/scientific benchmarks etc. So what did they identify?

Housekeeping standards are key. The report identified that good housekeeping standards could reduce slip and trip accidents by 25%. Now apart from the 25% figure - this isn’t particularly groundbreaking. We’re all aware that tidy walkways free from liquids and obstructions are less hazardous than wet, slippery, junk-cluttered walkways. But the more interesting facts identified are how to keep your walkways clear. HSL claim that you need to take a global approach to housekeeping, and it isn’t just rubbish that you need to keep under control. The general appearance of your workplace also affects things. If your site has seen better days and could do with a bit of a spruce up, this has an effect on the attitudes of your staff, i.e. if the workplace is a mess, a clean floor isn’t a priority!

How can you deal with this? If you think your site falls into this category, then you could do worse than having a big push on housekeeping and maybe a coat of paint etc. However, we’d suggest you don’t do it purely on the basis of safety, as there are more benefits than just a reduction in slips and trips. HSL also say a cleaner, tidier workplace will increase productivity, reduce sickness absence, minimise damage to tools and equipment, reduce fire risks and improve the morale of your staff.

Tip. If you decide to clean up your workplace, when you’ve got it to a standard you’re happy with, take some photos and display them prominently. Also, put up some small but well placed signs, i.e. “Make sure your workplace looks like this before you leave - it’s your job, not someone else’s”.

Slip, trip and fall accidents could be cut by 25% with good housekeeping. To get big improvements you need to keep your entire workplace clean, not just the floors.
