If it’s over £100, use a credit card
Hijacked. Websites like Ebay and Amazon have always been targeted by fraudsters. It seems they’re trying a new scam to lure you into parting with your cash. In this case we heard about a camera which was on sale for £500. When the purchaser tried to buy it he was told the seller “only accepted Moneygrams” and to contact them directly. When he did so the seller explained that the costs of accepting credit cards were too high, so by accepting payment in cash the savings could be passed on. Sounds genuine but, of course, when the money was sent no camera appeared. The website didn’t want to know as this was a direct transaction.
Tip. It may seem as though you’re getting a bargain by paying cash, but a credit card offers you extra protection on Internet purchases. Under s.75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 if you buy an item over £100 which doesn’t turn up, the card issuer must reimburse you.
