LIFT TRUCKS - 19.02.2010

Q&A - does a forklift need a tax disc?

Q. We’ve heard that because we occasionally use our forklift just outside our premises to unload vehicles, we need to register it with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), and the relevant duty must be paid. Is this really the case?

A. Unfortunately, this is true - all vehicles driven on the public highway must be registered with the DVLA. If your vehicle is being used within 914m (1,000 yards) of your premises, it needs to be registered as a “works truck”. If you want to use it further afield, then the classification is dependent on the type of truck and what it will be used for.

Note. In addition to displaying a tax disc, your vehicle will need to display a number plate and be insured for use on the public highway.

Tip. To avoid insurance and tax, and the safety issues involved with coming into contact with members of the public and other road users, unload lorries etc. on private land wherever possible.

To use a forklift truck on the public highway it must be registered with the DVLA, plus display a valid tax disc and number plate. So to avoid all this, and minimise the safety implications of being near other road users etc., unload vehicles on private land if you can.
