Feed-in tariffs cut

Mechanism hit by cuts. The UK’s feed-in tariff (FIT) mechanism, which guarantees payments for anyone generating their own renewable energy, has been affected by the government’s spending cuts. The level of incentive available to those who install solar energy systems bigger than 50kW in capacity has been cut dramatically. Under the present FITs system, which came into effect in April, solar panels with between 10kW and 100kW capacity would receive 32.9p per kWh, while bigger installations of between 100kW and 5MW would get 30.7p per kWh.

Cutbacks. But under new plans proposed, solar installations of 50kW to 150kW will receive just 19p per kWh, mid-sized installations with 150kW to 250kW capacity will get 15p per kWh, and the big systems of between 250kW and 5MW will get just 8.5p per kWh. This means that if you had planned to install 100kW of solar panels, you will now receive 42% less cash than you would have done originally. Other technologies haven’t been hit so hard.

Cuts will mean that those investing in solar panels will receive 42% less cash than under the previous tariffs. Other technologies haven’t been hit as hard.
