SAFE USE OF MACHINERY - 14.04.2011

Q&A - are there new machinery safety standards?

Q. We’ve heard that there are new legal standards for machinery safety. Is this true and how will we be affected?

A. The law remains unchanged, i.e. the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 still apply. So for users of machinery the requirements are just the same. There is, however, a new code of practice for those who build machinery. ISO 12100:2010, Safety of machinery - General principles for design - Risk assessment and risk reduction replaces and consolidates three previous standards on the design of safe machinery (see The next step). It isn’t a legal requirement, but it’s best practice for machinery manufacturers to follow it.

There are no legislative changes which affect machinery safety standards, but there is a new standard for those who design machinery: ISO 12100:2010. Following it isn’t required by law, but doing so is recognised as best practice.
