Q&A - do we need to retrain tower erectors?

Q. We recently bought an access tower which uses the advance guardrail (AGR) system to protect those erecting it whilst it’s being put together. We’ve heard that because of developments in AGR products our staff need to re-qualify, even though their training card hasn’t yet expired. Is this true?

A. No. The Prefabricated Access Suppliers’ and Manufacturers’ Association (PASMA) has recently published a report which reviewed the process for erecting mobile access towers (see The next step). It confirms that, despite developments in AGR systems, the content of their “towers for users” training course is sufficient for existing cardholders. They shouldn’t need to retrain until the card expires, five years after issue. PASMA is, however, looking at expanding the course to provide more detail on AGR systems in the future.

Tip. Make sure that your staff are given time to familiarise themselves with the manufacturer’s instructions and that they feel confident in correctly using the new equipment. Ensuring that staff are competent is your responsibility, so if they can’t master the new equipment on their own, you will need to arrange for some refresher training.
