HMRC mail in your inbox

Consultation. Currently, the vast majority of e-mails that appear in inboxes bearing the HMRC logo are scams, but that’s about to change. HMRC recently carried out a consultation on communicating with taxpayers by e-mail and trials are likely to start later this year.

Important message. It won’t just be the odd letter, HMRC intends to send notices that have legal status, such as requests to file tax returns and penalty notices. This is fine in theory, but there are concerns that e-mails will be lost in spam which could lead to deadlines being missed.

Signing up. Before you sign up to HMRC’s e-mail service you could create a new clean e-mail address that you reserve only for official communications. That way you’re less likely to miss something important among the relentless stream of spam and junk mail.

HMRC will pilot e-mail communications with taxpayers this year. If you want to take part we suggest you set up a clean e-mail account to avoid official messages becoming lost in spam or junk mail.
