Working more efficiently with TeamViewer

The free TeamViewer program allows you to take control over someone else’s computer, or vice versa. This can come in handy to resolve technical issues or to collaborate in real time. How do you work more efficiently in TeamViewer?

Launch and connect automatically

If you want TeamViewer ( https://www.teamviewer.com/en - free for non-commercial use) to launch automatically with Windows, click on Extras ; Options and select the General section. Place a checkmark next to Start TeamViewer with Windows . The program will now appear in the System Tray (next to the clock). This gives you direct access to the program and lets you connect remotely with your computer (if it’s switched on).

Normally, TeamViewer uses passwords which change for every session. However, you can enter a password of your choice in the Personal Password section in the Extras ; Options ; Security menu. This remains valid permanently so you can always remotely log in on the computer. This is especially useful for computers which are constantly running or for which frequent remote support is necessary. Note. In this case, the user of such a computer can’t refuse the incoming connection and you will see their screen directly.

Set up a TeamViewer account

If you often connect remotely with certain computers, it will pay to set up a free TeamViewer account. Click on the profile photo at the left and choose Sign Up in the Computers & Contacts section. After signing up, click on the address book icon at the left side in order to configure your TeamViewer “connection partners”, i.e. the computers you often connect with remotely. They will be listed in the Recent Contacts section already, or you can add them by clicking on Add External Computer . Enter the TeamViewer ID, give the connection a name (in Alias ) and, optionally, enter the password. Tip. Only enter a password if it’s a permanent personal password (see above).

After selecting a computer, you can control it remotely, play a presentation remotely or even launch a video call via TeamViewer.

Advanced settings

In Extras ; Options ; Advanced you can make some useful changes to the settings. In Access Control you can configure that the local user should confirm specific actions before they are executed (e.g. transferring files and printing), or even that a number of actions should be refused automatically, such as keyboard locking or even controlling the computer remotely (in which case the local user will only be able to view what is happening remotely).

We advise disabling the QuickConnec t button in Advanced Settings for Computers and Contacts. Otherwise, this button will pop up in almost any program and this can become very annoying.

Changing settings during a session

You might want to change certain settings in the course of a TeamViewer session. You can do so via the buttons in the toolbar at the top. The most useful setting is the option to show the remote cursor or mouse pointer, which you don’t see by default. To enable this function, click on Display ; Show your Partner’s Cursor . In Communication, you can switch off the computer sound, you can launch a chat or video session or open the whiteboard. Tip. Use the Switch Side with Partner button in order to give the other person control over your computer.

Set up a free TeamViewer account if you often connect remotely with specific computers. You can set a permanent personal password (instead of the constantly changing password) in order to connect automatically to a computer which is switched on.
