Taking a well-deserved break
Why taking a break matters. If you run an SME, work at an SME or if you’re a freelancer, the temptation is to not take a holiday, or, if you do, to stay in touch with the office. An article in Business Matters magazine ( http://bit.ly/2rL0KNr ) tells you why a real break makes sense.
Going anywhere, anyhow? Rome2rio ( https://www.rome2rio.com ), (plus an app for iOS and Android), is our preferred method to get ideas about routes when travelling from city to city. It covers flights, trains, buses, ferries, car shares and rentals. Not just that, it combines transport methods, such as car and ferry or bus and train. It shows estimated costs and journey times.
Alternatives. There are alternatives for sites that cover different modes of transport, GoEuro ( https://www.goeuro.co.uk/ ) tries but it does not match Rome2rio. For example, it offered no train routes from London to Madrid and it doesn’t integrate modes of transport, i.e. the sections on flights, trains and buses are separate. Traveline ( http://www.traveline.info ) covers bus, rail and ferry for Great Britain and does a good job, while Trainline ( https://www.trainline.eu ) combines trains and buses for travel throughout Europe.
Or just take to the air. Skyscanner ( https://www.skyscanner.net ) will help you on flights and offers car hire, but not in an integrated way. Alternatively, Hopper ( https://www.hopper.com , iOS and Android) has a new approach as it predicts when flights will be cheapest. Just enter the travel dates and you will get alerts. Booking.com ( https://www.booking.com ) is linked to many of the travel sites mentioned here.
At your destination. If you’re heading to one of Citymapper’s 45 cities ( https://citymapper.com , iOS & Android), then you will not need anything else. Buses, metros, trams and ferries are all included, and the app lets you know when to get off the bus, handy in a strange city. HEREwego ( https://wego.here.com , iOS & Android) is useful for offline maps but it’s not obvious if it’s better than Google Maps ( https://www.google.com/maps , iOS & Android).
