Green transport ideas for SMEs

There can be benefits to switching to electric vehicles (EVs) for car fleets. We’ve looked at the tax implications, leasing deals and more.

All about the future. The National Grid site investigates the future impact on the demand for electricity based on the government’s announcement that petrol and diesel sales will be banned after 2040 ( https://ngrid.com/2Lw2mnc ).

National campaigns. The government and the car industry have launched a campaign entitled Go Ultra Low ( https://www.goultralow.com ). There is data on the benefits (financial and environmental) of going electric, on charging vehicles (with a map of charging points) and a useful set of calculators (journey cost savings, journey ranges and car tax savings). The Energy Saving Trust ( http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk ) is government-sponsored and aims to combat man made climate change by promoting energy conservation. It delivers comprehensive information on electric vehicles (EVs), including a well-made video on types of vehicles.

More information. Another resource for SMEs is the Electric Car section of Business Car Manager ( https://www.businesscarmanager.co.uk ). From explaining the various types of electric vehicles (hybrid, micro-hybrid, pure electric, etc.), it goes on to the financial implications of going electric and an overview of the marketplace.

Business data. For fleet owners, Business Car Manager looks at electric car business mileage rates and answers questions about EVs. Go Ultra Low has a section for fleet owners, covering whole life costs and residual values. Drive-electric ( https://www.drive-electric.co.uk ) is a typical example of what firms offer in terms of fleet management services.

What to buy? There is a wealth of EV buyers’ guides. We like What Car? ( http://bit.ly/2KZg8xH ), Car Magazine ( http://bit.ly/2kuVMBe ) and Alphr ( http://bit.ly/2KZo0iR ). This YouTube video ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewcWN-rHQ6Q ) has technical pros and cons of electric versus petrol/diesel and the Fully Charged Show ( http://bit.ly/2IOejHp ) has videos on the future of electric cars and more.

Check Go Ultra Low and the Energy Savings Trust to see what the government is doing on EVs. Try Business Car Manager for future advice on fleets.
