Scheme to reduce roadside inspections

Self-monitoring scheme. A new safety scheme, launched by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), allows companies which operate lorries and buses to reduce the number of times their vehicles are detained for roadside inspection.

How does it work? The earned recognition scheme involves signing up to share data with the DVSA, e.g. MOT initial pass rates and incidences of drivers breaking drivers’ hours rules (see The next step ). The information shared is used to prove that driver and vehicle standards are being met, enabling the DVSA to focus its time on other operators who may be less compliant.

Should you consider it? For the time being this scheme will only suit large companies. The investment in data collection and analysis software is not worth it if you only run a few vehicles.

The DVSA’s earned recognition scheme allows fleet operators to prove their competence and earn the right to fewer roadside inspections. It could save valuable time for drivers, but it’s not something to consider if you only have a few heavy goods vehicles.
