Tribunal statistics and awards

Latest statistics. In September 2018 the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) published the latest tribunal quarterly statistics (see The next step ). They cover the three-month period from April to June 2018 and show that tribunal claims have almost returned to pre-fee levels. Tribunal fees were previously abolished in July 2017. In addition, the MoJ has released the 2017/18 annual statistics which reveal that a total of 109,685 claims were accepted by the tribunal in the last year, compared with 88,476 in the 2016/17 period.

Average awards. The data also indicates that in 2017/18 the average award made by the tribunal for a successful claim was as follows: £15,007 for unfair dismissal; £24,322 for race discrimination; £13,212 for sex discrimination; £30,698 for disability discrimination and £6,796 for age discrimination. Whilst unfair dismissal compensation has a statutory cap, there is no such cap in discrimination claims.
