LEGIONELLA - 13.06.2019

Legionella British Standard updated

New release. The British Standards Institute has published British Standard BS 8580-1:2019 Water quality. Risk assessments for Legionella control. Code of practice . This is a major revision to the 2010 version of BS 8580-1 .

Do you need to read it? The majority of those involved in the management of hot and cold water systems or cooling towers won’t need to go beyond the HSE’s comprehensive and free-to-download publications on the subject, e.g. Legionnaires’ disease: The control of legionella bacteria in water systems. Approved code of practice and guidance (L8) and HSG274 Part 2: The control of legionella bacteria in hot and cold water systems (see The next step ).

Note. At £246, we predict that not many copies will be sold, not even to the target audience of legionella risk assessors.

Tip. One good development is that the revised standard requires the assessor to produce brief, clear, user-friendly reports without superfluous information. Therefore, if you receive a legionella risk assessment which claims to meet BS 8580-1:2019 but is filled with jargon and unnecessary padding, feel free to challenge it.

A new British Standard has been produced for those conducting legionella risk assessments. Unless you specialise in this area you’re unlikely want to purchase a copy (at £246 a pop). For most, the HSE’s comprehensive free information does the job.
