New fuel labels

Risk of disaster at the pumps. Mis-fuelling a vehicle is a costly mistake which wastes resources and can lead to environmental harm.

But as a result of a European Directive improved information is being provided at the pumps. The EU Directive 2014/94/EU has been transcribed into UK law via the Alternative Fuel Labelling and Greenhouse Gas Emissions (Miscellaneous Amendments) Regulations 2019 .

New labels. Since September 2019 it has been compulsory for “fuel identifier” symbols to be displayed at dispensing points. Special symbols have been developed for usual fuels such as petrol and diesel, along with hydrogen, compressed natural gas, liquefied natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas. The same labels must appear on new vehicles (near the filler cap) and in vehicle user manuals by April 2020.

Tip 1. There’s no requirement to label existing vehicles although you may choose to do so to reduce the likelihood of mis-fuelling.

Tip 2. The EU has produced a summary leaflet which includes the symbols. However, if you’re using this as a reference source ignore the implementation dates as these don’t apply in the UK (see The next step ).

For the EU’s leaflet on fuel labelling, visit http://tipsandadvice-environment.co.uk/download (EN 14.05.08).

New labelling at the pumps and on new vehicles is designed to reduce the risk of the wrong fuel being used. These include symbols for alternative fuels such as hydrogen and liquefied petroleum gas. You don’t have to use them on existing vehicles.
