What’s the real Living Wage now?
Pay rates. The real Living Wage (RLW) is set annually by the Living Wage Foundation (see The next step ). Unlike the statutory national minimum wage (NMW) rates, which are recommended by the Low Pay Commission and influenced by the consumer price index, the RLW is based on what people actually need to live on, but its payment is entirely voluntary.
Higher wage. On 15 November 2021 the latest RLW rates were announced and they apply with immediate effect. For those working in London, the RLW is now £11.05 p.h; for workers in the rest of the UK it is £9.90 p.h. The RLW applies to all workers aged 18 and over. By comparison, the adult rate of the NMW, which is set to rise to £9.50 p.h. on 1 April 2022, is only payable to workers aged 23 and over.
