Q&A - do vehicle positioning jacks fall under LOLER?

Q. Should equipment that is used to raise vehicles be subject to a twelve-month Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) thorough examination or do they only fall under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1992 (PUWER) ?

A. A vehicle positioning jack uses the power of hydraulics to raise part of a vehicle, thereby providing access to perform repairs or maintenance. The definition of lifting equipment under LOLER is “work equipment for lifting and lowering loads. This includes ... attachments used for anchoring, fixing or supporting [the equipment]” . Therefore, as vehicle positioning jacks support a lifted load they fall under both PUWER and LOLER and are subject to a thorough examination every twelve months to be conducted by a competent person.

Tip. All lifting equipment should be marked with a safe working load, so make sure that you do not exceed this limit so as not to misuse and potentially damage it.

Tip. Always undertake a complete safety check of your vehicle positioning jack before each use. Look for broken parts, wear and tear and if the hydraulic cylinder is full or has leakages.
