New website for court and tribunal judgments

The government has launched a new free "find case law" website for users to access court and tribunal judgments in England and Wales. What’s online so far?

The future of BAILII

For many years, BAILII (see Follow up ) has provided free access to UK court and tribunal judgments under a contract with the government. Although that contract ended in April 2022, BAILII will still provide free access to judgments.

Pro advice. BAILII will continue to publish all the judgments that it currently publishes, as it will now receive future judgments from the government under licence.

Find case law

To replace its contract with BAILII, the government has launched a new free service for judgments from England and Wales through the National Archives (TNA). The “find case law” website (see Follow up ) has launched with decisions from the superior courts, i.e. the Supreme Court, the Court of Appeal, the High Court and Upper Tribunals. Over the coming months and years, TNA will expand the coverage of its website to include new and historical judgments from the lower courts and tribunals, plus legacy judgments.

Pro advice. Over time, this means you will have two free options to search online for case law - BAILII and this new official government archive.
