INSPECTIONS - 22.05.2023

HSE targets fairground safety

What’s going on? This summer the HSE is targeting inspections on the safety of specific fairground and theme park rides after a string of incidents. The programme, which runs until September 2023, will feature an additional 100 inspections and aims to promote the safe use of certain rides.

Targeted rides. Specific rides being targeted are Round Ups, Crazy Frogs, Twists, high speed rides and Star Flyers used at travelling fairground and theme park sites. Each of the rides will be inspected to ensure that they are safe for workers and passengers to use, and are being correctly maintained and operated. For more information on the campaign and advice on fairgrounds, see The next step . Tip. If you are holding any family fun days this summer, you should ensure that you only hire from reputable organisations and ask to see paperwork to prove that the rides are thoroughly inspected and maintained prior to use.

After several high profile cases, the HSE is cracking down on unsafe rides. If you are operating or using these rides, e.g. for family fun days, you must ensure that relevant safety checks are in place.
