WORKING AT HEIGHT - 20.09.2023

Harness wearing on mobile tower scaffold

Guidance. Both PASMA and the HSE specifically recommend that a safety harness and lanyard are not used when working on a mobile tower. If the guardrails have been correctly installed then the tower has collective fall protection so personal fall prevention is not necessary. In fact, it would be unsafe to use a safety harness on a scaffold tower as there are no anchor points on the tower for a person to attach to. If a worker were to fall from a scaffold tower, they would pull it, and anyone else using it, down on top of them.

Tip. Use our risk assessment - mobile tower scaffolds and instruct your staff on the safe system of working from this piece of equipment (see The next step ).

For our risk assessment - mobile tower scaffolds, visit https://www.tips-and-advice.co.uk , Download Zone, year 22 issue 2.

The wearing of harnesses on a mobile tower scaffold is considered to increase the risk of harm in the event of an incident and therefore workers should not be attached to the equipment. Make sure you train your staff in the safe way of working from a mobile tower scaffold.
