HAVS guidance updated

Vibration. Hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) caused by exposure to vibration at work is preventable, but once the damage is done it is permanent. Reported in 2022 there were 300 new cases of HAVS, 150 of carpal tunnel syndrome and 200 of Dupuytren’s contracture (starting with lumps, dimples or ridges on your palm this is when one or more fingers bend in towards it). But this is probably just the tip of the iceberg, as many cases go undisclosed.

Updates to the HSE’s vibration webpages. The HSE has refreshed its guidance to include:

  • replacing the vibration exposure and monitoring PDF
  • an updated page that offers advice for employers on HAVs
  • the webpage featuring the Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005 has been updated to remove any outdated content

Tip. We’ve updated our documents to align with the new guidance. For our Hand-Arm Vibration Calculator , see The next step .

Hand-arm vibration syndrome is a debilitating but preventable disease. Measure the exposure of your employees using our updated calculator and employ suitable controls such as job rotation if limits are exceeded.
