LIGHTING - 09.05.2024

Benefits of task lighting

Adequate lighting levels. According to the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 you must provide lighting levels that are sufficient to allow people to work and move about safely. Whereas natural lighting is preferred, it is not always possible. But if you are operating a hybrid style of working patterns, full lighting of the entire workplace may be unnecessary (and expensive). Providing task lighting can be a good solution.

Task lighting. Targeted lighting will illuminate specific work areas, providing focused and adequate light for tasks such as reading, writing or computer work. Effective management of task lighting can significantly impact comfort and efficiency. Tip. Regularly clean light fixtures and adjust lighting angles to maintain optimal illumination levels.

Selecting the right lighting. Choose the right light fixture that suits the task at hand - adjustable desk lamps or under-cabinet lighting are popular options. Position the light source correctly to minimise glare and shadows, ensuring it illuminates the task without causing visual discomfort. Select bulbs with appropriate colour temperature and brightness levels to create a conducive working environment. Tip. Use our Internal Lighting Checklist to help decide whether you are providing the correct levels of lighting to enhance productivity and reduce eye strain in various settings (see The next step ).

Maintain appropriate lighting levels by offering adequate task lighting. Supply adjustable and portable fixtures that employees can customise to their liking to prevent glare and eye strain.
