Rethinking views on traffic incidents

Work-related injury? National Highways is concerned that there are five deaths on UK roads each day. There are 500,000 heavy goods vehicles registered in the UK with 5m vans, 1m company cars and 14m in the grey fleet. Considering this makes up around half of all vehicles on the road, a large proportion of these accidents will be work-related. Yet they are currently not reportable under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013 .

Keeping staff safe. Driving is possibly the most dangerous activity undertaken on a day-to-day basis so you should view driver safety in the same way you manage other hazards. Tip. Driver fitness, capabilities and health should be regularly checked, as in most road traffic incidents it is human failings that are the main cause.

Tip. If you already have a policy, revise it to make sure it’s fit for purpose and communicated to those people who will be affected by it. If you don’t have a current policy, use our Driving and Riding at Work Policy and amend it to suit your business (see The next step ).

Don’t forget to consider your drivers when assessing risks for your workforce. Make sure they are fit to drive and train your policy to them to reduce the risk of them being involved in a road traffic incident.
