Hammer that hard drive!

Research shows that more than 50% of discarded hard drives still contain information that criminals can use to fake identities. So what can you do about it?

If you’re disposing. The problem all starts with the disposal of computer hardware. Every year, PCs are replaced, leaving a whole pile of redundant machines. But they still have a value and many end up on Internet auction sites or are part-exchanged via the trade.

Clean up. Of course all data on the hard drive is erased first, so what’s the issue? In fact, according to a University of Glamorgan survey (which you may have read about in the national press), more than 50% of supposedly clean hard drives still contain sensitive information which could be used by criminals perpetrating identity fraud. Many of the hard drives examined contained personnel, bank and insurance details - all that’s needed to fake an ID.

Open the toolbox. Apparently, the only 100% safe way of removing data is to physically destruct the hard drive - if necessary with a hammer. But given that many companies and their directors will not resort to such drastic measures, you need to make sure you protect the company against ID fraud.

Customers with care. As far as your existing customers are concerned, there’s of course no problem - you know who they are. But for anyone that’s new and unknown to you, some basic precautions should help ensure you don’t become a victim.

Tip. Tighten up your customer verification procedures. Relying on documentary evidence alone to prove ID can be dangerous - it’s so easy to fake bank statements, headed paper etc. Always ask for bank and trade references - if the potential customer gets nervous when asked, walk away; he’s probably got something to hide. Ideally check out any address that you’re given - go and physically inspect the premises (if they exist).

The only 100% safe way to remove data from a hard drive is to destroy it. As not everyone’s going to do this, take out references on new customers - just to make sure they’re who they say they are.
