Are your staff moonlighting?

Rise of the second jobber. The friendly society, Liverpool Victoria, surveyed 1,000 workers to identify the percentage with second jobs and the reasons behind taking them.

Its findings were as follows:

• Over 50% work ten hours a week in a second job.

• More than 16% work at least 21 hours a week in a second job.

• 44% have two jobs in order to pay for living expenses.

• 10% work to clear debts including student loans.

• 5% do a second job to save for a holiday or special event.

Implications for you? This could have implications for you in terms of productivity, conflicting business interests and health and safety, e.g. staff having accidents through tiredness. One way to deal with this is to introduce a policy on holding second jobs and make it a requirement that staff notify you first. Whilst some will choose to keep this fact quiet (it’s their business after all) you should at least have done enough to cover your back in the event of a problem.

New research shows that 50% of the 1,000 workers interviewed worked for ten hours a week in a second job. Due to the impact on productivity etc., require staff to notify you first.
