The risks of illegal software
Survey results. It seems that many companies are unaware of the risks posed by the use of pirated software. According to a survey by the Business Software Alliance (which, we’ll admit, has a vested interest in making sure everyone buys licensed software), nearly 50% believed there’s no risk from using unlicensed software, whilst 85% don’t know that it could render their computers and networks vulnerable to viruses. And although 97% of those questioned believed that their companies were operating legal software, in truth, nearly 30% of all UK businesses are thought to be using pirated software.
What are the risks (and what’s the harm, anyway)? Do you think Bill Gates really misses the extra dollars Microsoft would earn if every company used licensed software? Well, that’s not really the issue - using pirated software is a crime and prosecutions are on the increase. Last year the average fine exceeded £10,000. Moreover, pirated software often comes from dodgy sources and because it doesn’t get the same support and patch updates as legal software, you could put your company’s network and data at risk by using it.
They’re the cause. Even if you’re not operating pirated business applications, your network (and you personally) could be at risk if you turn a blind eye to your employees’ activities. If they’re downloading illegal software at work or loading it on to your network, you’re just as culpable.
Tip. Now is the time to introduce an acceptable use policy which is enforced through disciplinary sanctions. You could call a brief amnesty then start to get heavy with staff who don’t follow the rules.
