Spinning around the UK Web

Healthy living

Realbuzz.com is an excellent health site we’ve visited before, but it’s been revamped and deserves another look. The site is clearly up-to-date, since its Revitalise your Life section already presents “10 healthy ways to beat the credit crunch”... But you can also check out “25 ways to change your life”, “20 ways to live longer and how to avoid the ageing process”, “10 ways to gain control of your life”, “12 ways to maximise your time”, “25 things to do before you die”, etc. And there’s much more than the Revitalise section. For instance, there’s general health (“10 tips to beat fatigue”), healthier lifestyle, healthy eating (“The benefits of drinking tea”), managing stress (“10 tips to clear your head”), relationships (“How to read body language”), smoking, drinking and your health, alternative therapies, body image, etc. The “top 10...” approach may look a bit flippant at first, but the articles are well written, practical and to-the-point. Some of the items are available as podcasts which you can play directly or download, and there are several health blogs as well. Go for it.

By students for students

If you know a student or are one yourself, the myUKstudents.co.uk site might be useful. You need a university e-mail address to join, but once you’ve done so you can tap into several practical sections. In My Region you get to know your region; My Classifieds enables you to buy and sell items (at 99p per listing); My Accommodation helps you to find somewhere to live in your university city and also gives renting tips; whereas My Career helps you to find a job - you can even upload your CV to the site free of charge. Check out this site built by students for students!

Buying green

MoreEco is an “eco shopping reward site”: it searches the Web for the “best organic, green, environmental and natural online retailers” and negotiates a reward level with them which can be passed on to MoreEco registered users. Once you are shopping, you earn points that can be redeemed for vouchers, eco-friendly acts, subscriptions, gadgets, etc. Your rewards are sent to you free of charge. MoreEco also pledges that for every ten points you earn they will offset 1kg of CO2! The site presents a list of recommended green shops in various categories (department stores, food and drink, home and garden, energy, mother and child, etc.). For each shop, you’ll see how many points you will earn for each £1 you spend. Once you’ve chosen a shop, you’re transferred to the site to buy the goods and earn points.

The Christmas kitchen

It’s not too soon to start planning for Christmas, especially if you’re the one doing the cooking. The BBC’s Good Food department recently opened its Christmas Kitchen section. It covers everything from stuffing, basting and carving your turkey to Christmas cake and everything in between - the perfect roast, side dishes, puddings, etc. In addition, there’s a section which helps you to plan ahead using recipes from the December 2007 Good Food Magazine. You can, of course, seek inspiration on the rest of the Good Food site as well - you can search recipes by keyword, there’s an RSS feed for daily recipe updates, you can add your own recipes and comment on others’, and there are, of course, blogs.
