Fit notes - new employers’ guidance

Clock is ticking. We’ve previously explained how “fit notes” will shortly replace “sick notes” and what this change means for you (yr.12, iss.5, p.3, see The next step). These will come into effect on April 6 and are a massive, though not necessarily welcome, shake-up of the current system which has been fraught with difficulties for employers.

New guidance. To help deal with the transition, the Department of Work and Pensions has now issued guidance on the new process (see The next step). It includes information on how GPs will use fit notes, i.e. when they will tick the “unfit for work” or “may be fit for work” options. It also explains how employers are expected to liaise with an employee when the second one is chosen.

Tip. The guidance also contains a specimen of the new fit note, so you can see what you will be dealing with and details on what each of the boxes mean. Some of the worked examples are pretty basic, but the guidance still offers a useful insight into the new system.

To help employers deal with fit notes, the Department of Work and Pensions has issued some detailed guidance. It includes a sample of the new form and worked examples of how it’s meant to work in practice.
