Increase in National Minimum Wage
On October 1 2010, the National Minimum Wage was increased. The adult rate rose from £5.80 to £5.93 per hour; the development rate for 18 to 20-year-olds increased from £4.83 to £4.92 per hour; and the rate for 16 to 17-year-olds increased from £3.57 to £3.64 per hour. In addition, there is now a new minimum of £2.50 per hour for apprentices who are either under 19 or in the first year of their apprenticeship.
Minimum annual salary. This means that the minimum salary for an employee aged 21 or over and working a 40-hour week will be £12,335 (52 weeks x 40 hours x £5.93). Review your current salaries to ensure all staff are being paid at least the minimum wage.
