Advanced pasting and copying

Ctrl-C, Ctrl-X and Ctrl-V: everyone knows these Windows shortcuts for copying, cutting and pasting by heart. And yet, these functions themselves are rather limited. We looked for solutions to two frequent problems.

Pasting unformatted text. Do you want to copy text from an e-mail message or a website to a Word document? In this case, not only the text will be copied, but the formatting as well: the font, the colour, graphic elements, etc. This is generally not what you want. In Word, you can paste pure text via Edit; Paste Special, but it’s easier to install a free tool such as PureText (http://www.stevemiller.net/puretext/), which allows you to paste “unformatted” text in any Windows application. To do so, you only need to use the combination Windows Key+V instead of Ctrl+V.

Multiple clipboards. When you copy text, it is copied to your computer clipboard. However, this is only a temporary storage facility: as soon as you copy a new bit of text, the previous item in the clipboard will be deleted. ClipCube (http://clipcube.wikispaces.com) can do better than this. It’s a tool which collects all the text fragments you copy, and from here you can open them and copy them into other applications. You can optionally configure that a time marker should be added next to each fragment, which makes it easier to find an item. You can also specify how long the clips should be preserved.

Tip. It’s a good idea to have both tools start together with Windows automatically - you can configure this by right-clicking on the program icon and enabling the appropriate option.

Use PureText in order to paste unformatted text directly in any Windows application. The free ClipCube tool creates a bigger and more flexible clipboard.
