Two National Minimum Wage rates frozen!
Prediction. We previously told you that there was a possibility National Minimum Wage (NMW) rates would be frozen this year following pressure from employer groups (yr.13, iss.18, pg.2, see The next step). The government has now confirmed its intentions here, so what’s on the cards for October 1 2012? Only two of the current NMW rates will go up on this date. These are as follows:
- the “adult rate” which is payable to those aged 21 and over is going to rise by 1.8% from £6.08 p.h. to £6.19 p.h.; and
- the training rate for apprentices will increase by 1.9% from £2.60 p.h. to £2.65 p.h.
Freeze. The NMW rates which are payable to 18-20 year olds (£4.98 p.h.) and 16-17 year olds (£3.68 p.h.) are both frozen and will, therefore, not change on this date. It should be noted that the above is subject to Parliamentary approval, but there’s no reason why it won’t be given.
