Toddler fell through gap

Prosecuted. The Slug and Lettuce pub chain has been taken to court after a toddler fell through a staircase balustrade into the basement below. Fortunately, the child was not seriously injured despite falling six feet at the Hanover Street premises in London. The company pleaded guilty to health and safety charges and was ordered to pay fines and costs of over £33,000. Tip. If your building is used by children under five years of age, a 100mm diameter sphere must not be able to pass through the guarding of the staircase. Its design should also prevent children from easily climbing it.

A national pub chain has been prosecuted following an accident in which a toddler fell six feet through a staircase balustrade. If under fives use your building, check that guarding of your staircase can’t allow a 100mm diameter sphere to pass through.
