Is shared grandparental leave going ahead?

Proposal. The statutory shared parental leave (SPL) regime was introduced in April 2015. It enables working mothers to end their maternity leave early and share their remaining leave and pay rights with their partner or the child’s father. Shortly after its introduction, the government indicated that it would be extending SPL rights to working grandparents in 2018. We’re now halfway through the year, so what’s happening with the extension to SPL?

Under review. Apparently, “grandparental leave”, as it has become more commonly known, has been “put to one side” whilst the government carries out a full evaluation of the SPL regime. The findings of this evaluation are expected to be published in early 2019.

Tip. Whilst SPL may well be altered following this review, it’s unlikely that any changes will take place immediately. We’ll be watching closely and will keep you updated with all developments.

The shared parental leave (SPL) regime was due to be extended to working grandparents in 2018. However, this plan has been put to one side while the government carries out an evaluation of SPL generally. The outcome of that review is expected in early 2019.
