Q&A - how often to test wiring?

Q. We’ve heard that we should carry out tests of our fixed wiring installation every five years. Is this correct?

A. Periodic inspection and testing of electrical installations is an essential part of your maintenance programme, enabling you to comply with the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 (EAWR) . The frequency of five years between periodic inspection and testing comes from BS 7671 “Requirements for electrical installations” (also known as the IET Wiring Regulations ). This code of practice is the recognised way of meeting the EAWR requirements in the UK.

Tip. The majority of lower risk premises such as offices and shops have a recommended five yearly frequency; however, this varies according to the type of premises, e.g. three yearly for industrial premises (see The next step ).

For a summary of electrical inspection and testing frequencies, visit http://tipsandadvice-healthandsafety.co.uk/download (HS 17.10.08).

Follow a schedule of inspection and testing for electrical installations which follows the IET recommendations. A five yearly inspection is appropriate for most low risk premises whilst a three yearly programme is advised for industrial workplaces.
