Planning for an uncertain future

The business climate has not been so uncertain for many decades. We look at the economic state of play, SMEs’ fears and some initiatives that could help.

SMEs’ fears. A recent report by Robert Half showed that two main fears were the economic uncertainty and the increasing dependency on technology. Here are the details ( http://bit.ly/2ZFiRUm ) - the need for better management is one outcome. It’s also proving difficult to fill skilled roles, an issue focused on by SIA ( http://bit.ly/2ILsoDL ), who point out the uncertainty on immigration policy that Brexit brings. Business Matters magazine ( http://bit.ly/2ZMA6Do ) argues the top priority for SMEs should be “technology and talent”, and that internal training should play a bigger part in a post-Brexit world.

The Brexit factor.Parliament.uk ( http://bit.ly/2X3SfiX ) has a downloadable “Brexit timeline” (PDF) that lists all events from a UK perspective. The European Council ( http://bit.ly/31TKlHO ) lists every agreement reached/decision taken since the EU Referendum.

Business planning at a time of uncertainty. The National Audit Office has issued a detailed report on the UK’s contingency plans for a no-deal situation, codename Yellowhammer ( http://bit.ly/2ZGVMR9 ). These plans are currently on hold. The European Commission has given advice to the EU27 on preparing for a no-deal situation ( http://bit.ly/2FsMyA8 ).

Recent initiatives and requirements. The Government’s has announced a financial support package for UK SME exporters ( http://bit.ly/2KxJMhj ). This aims to unlock finance for SMEs exporting to emerging markets. The Construction Industries Training Board has produced a plan to combat the potential skills shortages after Brexit - called Building After Brexit ( http://bit.ly/2XuwN6a ). The FSB has produced a Small Business Plan for Europe ( http://bit.ly/2NocuDN ).

News and opinions. A good place is EUReferendum.com ( http://eureferendum.com ), a series of essays by Richard North. The Conversation’s Brexit section ( https://theconversation.com/uk/brexit ) is good on taking an historical view. Up-to-date news - Politico’s Brexit pages ( https://www.politico.eu/section/brexit ). Deutsche Welle ( http://www.dw.com/en/top-stories/brexit/s-32798 ) - useful for Brexit news and views.

Check the National Audit Office site for Brexit contingency planning. Use Business Matters and the FSB for ideas, Politico for news.
