uninterruptable power supply alert

Warning. The HSE has issued a safety alert aimed at those who use industrial uninterruptable power supply (UPS) systems. There have been at least two fires caused by the overheating of capacitors found in equipment manufactured by ICAR of Monza, Italy.

Note. A UPS is a device which provides an instant power supply when the normal supply fails, enabling computer equipment to continue operating for a period of time. It is used in situations where a loss of power could be critical, and in some cases a threat to life.

Tip. Check out the details of the alert if you have an industrial sized UPS system, such as those used in IT infrastructure or hospital operating theatres (see The next step ). Speak with your specialist UPS contractor to ensure that any faulty parts are identified and replaced as needed, and that you have an adequate programme of maintenance.

The HSE warns that there is a potential danger from fire due to faulty parts in industrial sized UPS systems. If you have such equipment, check whether you’re maintaining it correctly to ensure this critical equipment doesn’t let you down or cause a fire.
